Essential Resources for Laid-Off Workers
FlexJobs and MyPerfectResume are dedicated to supporting job seekers navigating career changes at all phases of their career journey. Recognizing the significant impact of job loss, MyPerfectResume has provided a post-layoff roadmap, including advice on the immediate steps to take after a layoff and leveraging transferable skills to support workers navigating the next chapter of their careers.
5 Immediate Steps to Take After a Layoff
MyPerfectResume advises those affected by layoffs to promptly strategize with these five key steps:
-
Don't panic – Job seekers are expected to be emotional after losing a job. Take a short break to clear any negative thoughts and process feelings, whether shock, frustration, or anxiety.
-
Request a written confirmation – Asking for a termination letter or a written explanation will help explain the reasons for termination and determine the next steps.
-
Review severance and unemployment options – Check eligibility for severance pay and when it will be paid. Read state unemployment eligibility prerequisites to start collecting the required documentation.
-
Examine budget and financial situation – Take stock of savings and cut unnecessary expenses. If struggling, check for rent or mortgage assistance, food aid, or other support programs.
-
Update resume and online presence – Job seekers may consider adding an "open to work" badge on LinkedIn and updating their resume with their latest work and recent achievements.
Identifying and Applying Transferable Skills
Identify Transferable Skills: Recognize hard and soft skills that are applicable across roles and industries, such as:
-
Adaptability and resilience
-
Customer service
-
Written and verbal communication
-
Leadership
-
Problem-solving and critical thinking
-
Project management
-
Technical aptitude
-
Time management and organization
Emphasize Transferable Skills in Applications: Job seekers should customize cover letters and resumes to target roles by reading the description closely and highlighting the skills that align with their proficiencies. If they don’t have experience in the field and lack the required technical skills, then focus on transferable skills in the following key areas:
-
Professional summary – A short introduction to the candidate focusing on transferable skills relevant to the position.
-
Skills – Create a dedicated skills section listing any transferable skills. Include both hard skills (e.g., software proficiency, language fluency) and soft skills (e.g., negotiation, resilience) that apply to the job requirements.
-
Work experience – When describing work experience, use specific examples to demonstrate how transferable skills have been applied in previous roles and highlight related achievements like leading cross-functional teams or implementing process improvements.
-
Education – In the education section, mention any coursework, projects, certifications and training programs, or extracurricular activities that have helped to develop transferable skills relevant to the target job.
-
Optional sections – Volunteer experience or professional development can also be included to demonstrate transferable skills in various contexts further and emphasize achievements.
