Profit from the Boom in the Skilled Trades!

In previous articles I have talked about the expanding opportunities for recruiters in projects such as data centers, power generation and transmission, steel mills, space-related ventures, and manufacturing in general. Much of this anticipated activity is due to the business-friendly policies and reshoring initiatives of the present administration. Reduced regulations, rapid expensing of capital investment, tariff-driven incentives for foreign investment, and a generally healthy and growing economy all contribute to a surge in demand for skilled trades workers. These workers are critical to the success of these ambitious projects.

Having said that, we have to realize that we have a shortfall of the very skilled tradesmen that are needed. What this means is that the increased demand for a limited labor supply will drive up salaries and will likely lead to a feeding frenzy as the various projects compete for scarce resources! Of course, increased salaries mean bigger payoffs for successful placements.

Examples of the highest paying skilled trades in play include:

Trade Estimated Annual Pay

High Voltage Lineworker $120k – 220k

Industrial Electrician $110k – 180k

Instrument Technician $100k – 170k

Millwright $100k – 170k

Crane Operator $100k – 180k

Pipefitter $100k – 180k

Specialty Welder $ 90k – 170k

So, who will be looking for these people? Some examples follow:

Data Centers

· Turner Construction

· DPR Construction

· Holder Construction

· Mortenson

· Rosendin Electric

· M.C. Dean

· Corbins

Steel Mills

· Nucor

· Steel Dynamics

· Cleveland-Cliffs

· United States Steel

Power Generation and Transmission Lines

· Investor-owned Utilities

· Rural Electric Cooperatives

· Engineer Procure Construct (EPC) Contractors

· Renewable Energy Developers

Shipbuilding

· General Dynamics Electric Boat

· Fincantieri Marinette Marine

· Ingalls Shipbuilding

While the mentioned feeding frenzy in the labor market for skilled trades will likely persist for several years, a serious effort is being made by the administration working with industry associations to enhance and expand training programs to rapidly produce the many skilled trades workers that will be needed in the future.

In the meantime, recruiters have a window of opportunity to profit bigtime by searching out candidates and matching them up to the contractors who will be doing the work. Do some research into firms being awarded contracts for construction or operations and be prepared to offer candidates when the need arises.
